Compacta Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata 'Compacta')

The versatile Compacta Holly, also called Japanese, or boxleaf holly, is much used here at Toms Creek because its handsome, dark-green, shiny foliage adds texture to shrub beds and borders, as well as to foundation, mass, or hedge plantings. LOW MAINTENANCE It is a dense-form, mounding that is slightly wider than it is high. Prefers slightly acid soils. Can be sheared. Easy to prune. The Compact Japanese Holly is a fantastic substitute for boxwood in hotter, humid areas where boxwood does not thrive, and an excellent dense evergreen bush for any location. It has small, rounded leaves and clips easily into rounded specimens Photos courtesy of Toms Creek Nursery in Denton, NC Ornamental Characteristics Category Shrub Environmental Characteristics
